As a condition for receiving NIH training grants, institutions are required to provide data about their research and training activities. To facilitate collecting and providing these data to training grant sponsors, UC San Diego has created a web-based reporting application called the Training Grant Administration System (TGAS).
This application allows users to create the data tables required by NIH for the submission of 5-year training grant renewals. TGAS users can manually enter the data required by NIH, and/or import available data on students, faculty, staff, graduate programs, academic departments and university contract/grant activity from campus databases or from TGAS reports created by other users. When complete, the data tables can be exported into Excel for submission to NIH.
UC San Diego units involved in developing TGAS include the Office of Research Affairs, the School of Medicine Dean's Office, the Office of Graduate Studies, and the Office of Contract and Grant Administration.
For additional information please visit the TGAS project website (UCSD only) or contact The Office of Research Affairs (tgashelp-l@ucsd.edu / (858) 534-9758).

Who should use TGAS? Faculty and staff involved in the preparation and submission of 5-year training grant reports.
How do I obtain access to TGAS? Open the application by going to https://research.ucsd.edu/tgas/user and signing on with your UCSD Single Sign On credentials.
The first time you try to use the system, you will be asked to fill out and submit an access request form & electronically sign the TGAS Terms of Use Agreement.
Next, your access request will be emailed to your supervisor for review and approval. If approved, your Departmental Security Administrator (DSA) will use Access Link to process your request and you will receive an email when it has been approved by Research Affairs.
I’ve found an error/bug. How do I report it? Please email the TGAS team and let us know about it: tgashelp-l@ucsd.edu.
Where do TGAS data come from? Campus data come from Coeus, ISIS, PPS, IFIS, SQLDSE and other campus databases. Data are refreshed on a nightly basis except those that change less frequently on average, such as applications/admissions data. TGAS users can also import data from reports created by other TGAS users.
In addition, for every training grant awarded by NIH, the Office of Contract & Grant Administration verifies and/or enters the following data to ensure the ongoing accuracy of TGAS:
How do I know the data are reliable? Before being added to TGAS, all campus data sources have been carefully reviewed by the Office of Research Affairs, the Office of Graduate Studies and the Office of Contracts & Grants for accuracy.
What if there is an error with the campus data? Please email the TGAS team and let us know: tgashelp-l@ucsd.edu.
How can new features be added? Please email the TGAS team and let us know what you’d like to see: tgashelp-l@ucsd.edu.
We are also interested in collaboration opportunities. If you are willing to contribute resources (labor and/or funding), we can work together to implement specific enhancements.
I know of a good source for reliable campus data, how can I get it added to TGAS? Please email the TGAS team and let us know: tgashelp-l@ucsd.edu
Can I use TGAS at my institution? UCSD is willing to license the source code free of charge to non-profit educational institutions. If you are interested, please email the TGAS team and let us know: tgashelp-l@ucsd.edu.
