Quality research requires adherence to the highest standards of integrity in proposing, conducting, and reporting research. UCSD researchers are expected to be aware of and to comply with all applicable policies and procedures of the University as well as extramural funding agencies to meet their obligations. This portal provides links to UCSD programs that oversee essential elements of research compliance and training.
Researchers must obtain appropriate approvals prior to beginning their research. Approval of research protocols and the release of funds are coordinated between the oversight offices and the Office of Contract and Grant Administration (OCGA). In addition to those below, other approvals may be necessary. OCGA provides guidance on agency-specific requirements as needed.
Animal Research
The Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) reviews and approves all proposed uses of live vertebrate animals in teaching and research. The Animal Welfare Program provides support to the IACUC and compliance oversight of the animal care and use program. Under the direction of the campus veterinarian, the Animal Care Program manages the care, housing and transportation of animals used in research at UCSD. View Animal Research Training
Biohazard Use
The Institutional Biosafety Committee reviews researchers’ applications for Biohazard Use Authorization to ensure the safe use of hazardous biological materials and recombinant DNA. View Biohazard Training
Conflict of Interest
The Independent Review Committee (IRC) reviews the personal financial interests reported by investigators to determine whether those financial interests constitute conflicts of interest that might potentially compromise the objectivity of the work to be conducted. View Conflict of Interest Training
Human Research
Five Institutional Review Board (IRB) committees review human subject research, including clinical trials, to ensure the ethical and equitable treatment of those subjects. View Human Research Training
