The San Diego Science & Technology Council (SDSTC)

The San Diego Science and Technology Council (SDSTC) is a network of San Diego 's leading science and technology organizations. Convened by the University of California , San Diego , SDSTC's mission is to enhance the region's innovation capability and global competitiveness. It does this by raising the visibility of the San Diego region as a world high-tech leader and engaging national decision makers and opinion leaders to refine and advance San Diego 's innovation agenda.

The Regional Network for Homeland Security (RNHS)

Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, members of our campus community began exploring ways in which UC San Diego could help our nation and region in this time of crisis. In April 2002, San Diego State University (SDSU) President Stephen Weber and University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Chancellor Robert Dynes agreed to a request from our elected officials that the two universities take a joint leadership role in coordinating regional responses to the scientific, technological, and operational challenges associated with regional security. In this capacity the two universities serve to convene The San Diego Regional Network for Homeland Security (RNHS), with working groups addressing preparedness issues in: biodefense; information systems; border, ports, and transportation security; securing critical infrastructure; and education, training and communications. The public and private organizations and members of RNHS are devoting their intellects, energies, and resources to enhance the preparedness capabilities of the San Diego region for the near and long term, against disasters natural or deliberate. In this regard they embody the fundamental mission of RNHS, which is to build on existing relationships of trust and understanding across institutional sectors throughout the region. It does so in the belief that these relationships are the most valuable and resilient resource in building regional preparedness.

Biotechnology and Bioethics:
Challenges to Innovation

Although the San Diego region is home to one of the richest concentrations of biomedical expertise in the world, it lacked an institutional forum for the articulation of diverse public interests in the implications of new "biotechnologies" and the responsible management of science and technology. The San Diego Science and Technology Council (SDSTC) is uniquely positioned to meet this need by providing a forum to promote the thoughtful examination of important research policy questions and sustain public confidence in and support for the progression of bioscience. With funding from the Department of Energy Office of Science, Division of Biological and Environmental Research, SDSTC hosted a series of events to engage national opinion leaders and local stakeholders in dialogue on important potential challenges to life sciences innovation. Transcripts and videos of these events are available on the SDSTC website: http://sdstc.ucsd.edu.
